Weighted Grade Calculator

Combines assignment categories and their weights into a course grade, separates what is already graded from what is outstanding, and works out the score still required.

Current grade
89.33%
B — graded work only (60% of the course)
Points banked
53.6%
out of 100 course points
Weights entered
100%
correctly totals 100%
Score needed on remaining work for 90%
91%

How to use the Weighted Grade Calculator

  1. List each component from the syllabus with its weight — homework, midterm, final, participation.
  2. Confirm the weights total 100%; the calculator flags it when they do not.
  3. Enter scores you already have and leave anything ungraded at zero.
  4. Read the current grade, which uses only graded work, rather than the banked-points figure.
  5. Check the last row for the average you need on remaining work to reach 90%.

How the calculation works

There are two legitimate numbers and confusing them causes most grade panic. Points banked is the sum of weight times score over all components, treating ungraded work as zero — a floor, and a depressing one mid-semester. Current grade renormalises over graded weight only: it divides earned points by the weight actually assessed so far, which is what instructors mean when they say 'you have an 87 right now'.

The required-score calculation inverts the same weighted sum. If you need a target T overall, you have banked P points, and W percent of the course remains ungraded, the average score needed on that remaining work is (T − P) ÷ (W ÷ 100). When that comes out above 100 the target is arithmetically out of reach; when it comes out negative you have already secured it.

Two syllabus features can break the model. Dropped lowest scores mean a category's effective weight shifts once enough items exist, and curved or scaled finals mean the raw score you enter is not the score recorded. Both are common; both make this a planning tool rather than a prediction. Enter the recorded scores your instructor reports, not raw marks off the paper.

Formula
Grade = Σ(weightᵢ × scoreᵢ) ÷ Σ weightᵢ; needed = (target − banked points) ÷ (remaining weight ÷ 100)

Worked example

Homework 20% at 92, midterm 30% at 84, participation 10% at 100, final 40% ungraded.

  1. Banked points = 0.20×92 + 0.30×84 + 0.10×100 = 18.4 + 25.2 + 10 = 53.6.
  2. Graded weight = 60%, so current grade = 53.6 ÷ 0.60 = 89.3%.
  3. For a 90% overall: needed = (90 − 53.6) ÷ 0.40 = 91.

Currently 89.3% (a B+), needing 91 on the final for a 90% course grade.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my current grade higher than the points I have banked?+

Banked points count ungraded work as zero. Current grade only averages what has actually been assessed, which is the fairer mid-semester view.

What if the weights do not total 100%?+

The calculator still normalises correctly, but a mismatch usually means a component was missed — recheck the syllabus.

How do I handle a dropped lowest quiz?+

Enter the category once, after the drop, with the average of the scores that will actually count.

Can it tell me the minimum to pass?+

Use the same formula with 60 or your institution's pass mark in place of 90 — the structure is identical.
