How to use the Final Grade Needed
- Enter your current grade in the course as a percentage.
- Enter your target final grade for the course.
- Enter the weight of the exam as a percentage of the course total.
- Read the required score, and check whether it exceeds 100%.
How the calculation works
A course grade is a weighted average of components. If the exam is worth w of the total, everything already completed accounts for (1 − w), so the required exam score is the target minus the contribution already banked, divided by w. Dividing by a small weight amplifies the gap, which is why a lightly weighted final cannot rescue a poor coursework average.
The result can legitimately exceed 100% or fall below zero. Above 100% means the target is mathematically unreachable without extra credit; below zero means you have already secured it. Both outcomes are useful information a week before an exam, when revision time has to be allocated between subjects.
Required = (Target − Current × (1 − w)) / w where w = exam weight as a decimalSource: Weighted average rearrangement; standard course grading practice.
Worked example
A student sits at 74% with a final worth 30% of the course, aiming for an 80% overall.
- Coursework contributes 74 × 0.70 = 51.8 points of the final grade.
- Target requires 80 points overall.
- Shortfall = 80 − 51.8 = 28.2 points, to be earned from a 30-point exam.
- Required score = 28.2 / 0.30 = 94.
A 94% exam is needed for an 80% course grade — reachable, but only with a strong paper.
Frequently asked questions
What if the required score is above 100%?+
The target is out of reach through the exam alone. Ask about extra credit or resubmissions, and set a realistic secondary target so revision time is spent where it can still change an outcome.
My syllabus lists many weighted components — can I still use this?+
Yes. Combine everything already graded into a single current percentage weighted by its share of the course, then treat the remaining assessment as one block with the leftover weight.
Does a dropped lowest score change the calculation?+
It changes your current grade, so recalculate that first with the lowest score removed. Only then feed the adjusted current percentage into the required-score formula.
How do letter grade cut-offs affect this?+
Enter the minimum percentage for the letter you want rather than a round number. If a B− starts at 80%, targeting 80 is enough — targeting 83 asks more of the exam than the grade requires.
