How to use the Army BTZ

How the calculation works
Promotion eligibility is driven by two clocks: time in service, measured from the basic active service date, and time in grade, measured from date of rank. The primary zone is the standard window when both clocks are satisfied; the secondary zone sits just behind it, and below the zone opens earlier still for a limited percentage of the cohort.
BTZ selection is competitive and quota-limited, so meeting the date requirement only makes a soldier eligible for consideration. Selection weighs evaluation reports, awards, physical fitness scores, military and civilian education, and command recommendation. Cut-off scores and window lengths move with force structure and retention, which is why the calculated date should always be checked against the current promotion message rather than treated as fixed.

Worked example
A soldier with a date of rank of 15 March 2025 in a grade whose primary zone requires 24 months in grade.
- Primary zone opens 15 March 2027.
- Secondary zone opens six months earlier: 15 September 2026.
- BTZ window opens a further twelve months earlier: 15 September 2025.
- Eligibility still requires the time-in-service minimum to be met.
BTZ consideration from September 2025 — eighteen months ahead of the primary zone, subject to quota and selection.
