Most material estimates start as a volume — length × width × depth — or an area, then get converted into the unit a supplier quotes. Concrete is ordered by cubic metre or cubic yard, so a slab depth given in millimetres or inches has to be converted before multiplying, and a depth error of a few millimetres across a large slab moves the order by a noticeable fraction.
Loose materials such as mulch, gravel and topsoil are sold by volume but settle after placement, while asphalt and aggregate are sold by weight, which means the estimate has to pass through a density figure. Densities vary by mix and moisture content, so confirm the figure with the supplier for anything large.
Every area-based material needs a waste allowance for cuts, breakage and mistakes.
