How to use the Speed Converter
- Enter the speed you have.
- Select its unit and the unit you want it in.
- Use metres per second for any physics calculation — it is the SI unit.

- Treat the Mach figure as indicative: the speed of sound changes substantially with altitude and temperature.
How the calculation works
All speeds convert through metres per second. The metric-to-imperial link is exact because both the mile and the hour are exactly defined: 1 mph is exactly 0.44704 m/s, and 1 km/h is exactly 1/3.6 m/s. The familiar rule of thumb that mph is roughly 1.6 times km/h is accurate to about 0.3%, which is fine for mental arithmetic and not fine for anything logged.
The knot is defined as one nautical mile per hour, or exactly 1.852 km/h. It survives in navigation because it maps directly onto latitude: a vessel making 10 knots covers 10 minutes of latitude an hour, which turns dead reckoning into simple arithmetic on a chart. Aviation kept it for the same reason, and because international flight planning needed a single unit that was not tied to either metric or imperial road conventions.
Mach number is a ratio, not a fixed speed. It compares an object's speed to the local speed of sound, which depends almost entirely on air temperature: about 340 m/s at 15 °C at sea level, but only around 295 m/s in the stratosphere. The figure shown here uses the ISA sea-level value, so an aircraft cruising at Mach 0.85 in the flight levels is travelling considerably slower in absolute terms than the same Mach number implies at ground level.

Worked example
A hire car in Europe shows 130 km/h on the limit sign and you think in mph.
- Enter 130 and select kilometres per hour.
- Convert to m/s: 130 ÷ 3.6 = 36.11 m/s.
- Convert to mph: 36.11 ÷ 0.44704 = 80.8 mph.
- Sanity-check with the rule of thumb: 130 ÷ 1.6 ≈ 81 mph.
130 km/h is 80.8 mph, so a UK motorway habit of 70 mph sits comfortably inside the limit at about 113 km/h.
Frequently asked questions
How fast is one knot in mph?+
1.1508 mph, or 1.852 km/h. Ten knots is about 11.5 mph.
Is the mph to km/h factor exactly 1.6?+
No, it is 1.609344. The 1.6 shortcut is 0.6% low, which compounds noticeably over long distances.
Why does Mach change with altitude?+
Because the speed of sound depends on air temperature, which falls with altitude up to the tropopause. The same true airspeed is a higher Mach number higher up.
