How to use the Deadlift 1RM
- Enter the weight lifted and reps completed with good form.
- Use a set taken close to failure, ideally 3–6 reps.
- Read the estimated 1RM and the percentage table below it.
- Program working sets from the percentages, not from the estimate itself.
How the calculation works
The Epley formula, 1RM = w × (1 + reps ÷ 30), is used here; Brzycki, w × 36 ÷ (37 − reps), gives a slightly lower figure at high reps. Both are regressions fitted to population data, so individual results vary with fibre type and technique — some lifters grind out many reps near their max, others cannot.
The deadlift is the most fatiguing of the main lifts because of the load and the spinal demand, so true maxes should be tested rarely. Estimates degrade beyond about ten reps as grip and lower-back endurance, not maximal strength, become limiting. Programme from percentages of the estimate: 65–75% for volume, 80–87% for strength, above 90% only for occasional peaking singles.

Worked example
A lifter completes 5 reps at 165 kg.
- Epley: 165 × (1 + 5/30) = 165 × 1.1667 = 192.5 kg.
- Brzycki: 165 × 36 / 32 = 185.6 kg.
- Take the range as roughly 186–193 kg.
- Volume work at 70% = 130–135 kg.
An estimated max near 190 kg, with volume sets programmed around 130 kg.

How accurate is the estimate?+

Should I test a true max?+
Rarely — a few times a year at most. Estimates are enough for programming.
Why is my deadlift estimate low relative to my squat?+
